Project summary:

The aim of the work presented here is to provide the missing tool for the optimization of the cargo securing procedure on RoRo-ships by calculating the loads in the lashings. The software tool presented here may also be used in the design process for RoRo-ships and their components. Ship motions are used as input for the simulation. They can be provided as time series from measurements or from hydrodynamic seakeeping simulations. The tool was developed using the theory of multibody system dynamics. The number of degrees of freedom has been minimized in order to obtain a fast analysis tool with out affecting the quality of the results.

The necessary data for ordinary semi-trailer, that represent the major ity of the loading on RoRo-ships, was collected by the Institute for Mechanical Engineering of the Hamburg University of Technology (MuM). Data from trailer manufacturer and well known methods from vehicle dynamics were used.

The software tool was tested with calculated ship motions provided by the Flensburger Schiffbau-Gesellschaft mbH & Co. KG (FSG). A comparison with measurements was not possible, since the provided measurements were insufficient.

The program is written in FORTRAN77 and can be integrated easily into the ship design system E4. Additionally, the program can be used to get data for the vibration analysis of completely loaded decks.
