As an industrial research centre in the network of the Alliance Industry Research (AIF - Allianz Industrie Forschung) CMT - formerly FDS - supervises maritime projects conducted under the programme Industrial Collective Research (IGF - Industrielle Gemeinschaftsforschung). The programmes´s goal is to maintain and strengthen the competitiveness of small and medium-sized enterprises. The projects are funded by the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology (BMWi).

In accordance with the tasks specified in the articles of association CMT participates in a variety of maritime research projects as scientific partner or coordinator. These projects are funded under the EU Framework Programmes, the programme Next-Generation Maritime Technologies of the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology or other national German programmes.
